What fascias and soffits in Ely homes actually do

The fascia is the board running along the bottom edge of the roof. It carries the gutter and closes off the ends of the rafters. The soffit sits underneath, closing the gap between the fascia and the wall, and bargeboards do a similar job along the sloping gable edges. Together they keep weather, birds and insects out of the roof space. When they fail, water can reach the rafter ends and wall plate, which are far more expensive to put right than a board.

Rotten fascia boards and fascia replacement

Painted timber fascias eventually split, flake and soften, particularly where a gutter has leaked or overflowed for a long time. A soft fascia cannot hold gutter brackets securely, so the gutter starts to sag and the problem gets worse. We check how far the rot has spread, replace boards where needed and make sure the timber behind is sound. Where the wider roof is coming to the end of its life, it can make sense to renew the roofline as part of a new roof or re-roof.

Soffit repairs, gaps and pests

Damaged or missing soffit boards leave an open route into the roof space. Birds, wasps and squirrels are quick to find these gaps, and nesting material can block the ventilation the loft needs. We repair or replace soffits, close off openings and keep ventilation in place so the roof space does not suffer from condensation. If you can hear activity in the eaves or see gaps along the underside of the roof edge, we can take a look during a free inspection.

Bargeboards, verges and the gable edge

Bargeboards protect the gable ends of the roof and are often exposed to the strongest winds. Rotten or loose bargeboards can let water into the verge and the top of the gable wall. When we replace them, we also look at the verge itself. Crumbling mortar verges can be upgraded to a mechanically fixed dry ridge and verge system at the same time, giving a tidy, low-maintenance finish along the whole edge.

Eaves, felt and the bottom of the roof

The bottom row of tiles, the felt or membrane and the fascia all work together at the eaves. If old felt has perished behind the gutter, water running down the roof can drip onto the fascia and into the wall instead of into the gutter. During roofline work we check this detail and can fit eaves protection where it is needed, so that new boards are not left exposed to the same problem that ruined the old ones.

Roofline work done with the gutters

Fascias and gutters are best dealt with together. Once new boards are in place, we refit or replace the guttering and downpipes with a proper fall so water leaves the roof cleanly. You can read more about our gutter repairs work. We carry out roofline work across Ely, Littleport, Soham, Cambridge and the wider area. Your questions, answered

Fascias & soffits
FAQs.

How do I know if my fascia boards are rotten?

Flaking paint, dark staining, gutters pulling away from the board or timber that looks swollen or split are common signs. A close inspection confirms how far the damage goes.

Can you replace fascias and soffits without replacing the roof?

Yes. Roofline work is often done on its own. We will tell you honestly if the tiles or felt at the eaves also need attention, so you can decide what to do.

Will my gutters be put back afterwards?

Yes. We refit sound guttering or fit new runs where the old ones are tired, set to a proper fall towards the downpipes.

Do you deal with birds nesting in the soffits?

We repair and close off damaged soffits so birds and insects cannot get back in, while keeping the ventilation the roof space needs.
