A new roof is about more than new tiles. DJW Roofing & Leadwork Ltd carries out complete re-roofs in Ely and across Cambridgeshire, with the supporting layers and finishing details treated as carefully as the visible covering. Danny has 15 years’ roofing experience and starts with a free inspection to establish whether replacement is appropriate. Where a repair is enough, that is the advice you receive. When a re-roof is needed, the written quote explains the work from strip-out to membrane, battens, tiles, valleys, ridges and verges.
Stripped back to the timbers
The existing covering is removed back to the roof timbers so their condition can be properly assessed. A clean new surface should not conceal damage underneath. Stripping the roof makes it possible to inspect the structure and identify where water, age or previous defects have affected timber. This is the foundation of DJW’s re-roofing process, rather than a shortcut that places new materials over uncertain supporting layers. The detail of access, protection and the work sequence is considered for the individual property.
Repairing damaged timber before covering
Once exposed, damaged timbers are repaired before the new layers are fitted. Rafters and other supporting members carry the covering, so their condition matters as much as the choice of tile or slate. Where further assessment is needed, it should be discussed before proceeding. The proposed roof covering also needs to suit the supporting structure: materials are not interchangeable simply because their colour looks similar. A repair-first approach applies here too, with the appropriate work guided by what is actually found rather than an assumption that every timber must be replaced.
Breathable membrane and correctly gauged battens
New breathable membrane provides a secondary weather layer beneath the tiles. It needs appropriate overlaps and careful installation at edges and junctions. Breathability does not remove the need to consider the roof’s ventilation and overall construction. Battens are then gauged to the tile being used. Their spacing determines the layout and overlap of each course, and must suit the chosen covering rather than a generic measurement. Correct preparation makes the roof more than a cosmetic improvement and gives the tiles a properly arranged support.
Tiles, valleys, ridges and verges
Tiles are laid in courses on the prepared battens, with attention to alignment and fixing. Valleys carry water where slopes meet, while ridges and verges finish the high points and edges. These details are either bedded or dry-fixed according to the roof and agreed specification. A dry system must be compatible with the covering, and traditional bedding still needs proper preparation and support. Chimney and wall junctions are considered alongside the main covering, with specialist leadwork available where those details need renewing as part of the project.
A roof suited to your property
Tile and slate have different appearance, weight and installation requirements. We discuss what fits the building, the existing roof geometry and any relevant planning or conservation considerations. If consent or specialist advice is required, that needs addressing before changes are made. Careful work and daily tidy-up are part of the process; all DJW work is guaranteed and the company is fully insured. The free, no-obligation quote gives you space to compare the proposed work and ask questions about the roof before making your decision.

New roofs & re-roofing
FAQs.
Will you check whether repair is possible first?
Yes. Replacement is not the automatic recommendation. We inspect the condition of the roof and explain whether a local repair or a full re-roof is the sensible option.
Do you strip the roof completely?
DJW’s re-roofing process strips back to the timbers, repairs damage, installs breathable membrane and gauged battens, then fits the covering and finishing details.
Can I choose tile or slate?
The choice depends on the roof pitch, structure and appearance of the property. We discuss suitable materials and any relevant consent considerations during the quote.
Are ridges and verges dry-fixed?
They can be bedded or dry-fixed according to the appropriate specification. We explain the options and compatibility with the chosen covering.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. All DJW work is guaranteed and the company is fully insured. Ask Danny for the details applicable to your particular roofing project.
