A real Ely re-roof

One of our recent jobs was a re-roof in Ely, and the homeowner, Shelly, recorded a video review once the work was finished. In her words: "They showed up on time… amazing value for money, super polite, really helpful. I couldn't ask for more." You can watch it below, and see more on our reviews page.

Tarley W. had a similar experience with a new roof: "They were reliable, on time and easy to deal with. The new roof looks fantastic, the crew worked hard, turned up on schedule and cleaned up well after themselves." That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every re-roof.

Signs it is time for a new roof

A single leak or a few slipped tiles is a repair. A new roof starts to make sense when problems keep coming back across the whole roof: tiles that are crumbling, flaking or slipping in several places, a roofline that has started to sag, daylight visible through the loft, or underlay that has perished and torn.

Repeated repairs on a roof at the end of its life can cost more over time than replacing it once. We will always tell you honestly whether a repair will do, and if a new roof is the better option we will show you photographs of why. For the bigger picture, see our new roofs and re-roofing service.

What a re-roof includes

We strip the old tiles or slates and battens back to the rafters, then check the timbers and replace any that are rotten or damaged. A new breathable membrane goes on next, followed by new battens set out to the correct gauge for the tiles or slates you have chosen.

The new tiles or slates are laid and fixed, then the ridges and verges are finished, often with a dry ridge and dry verge system. Flashings around chimneys and walls are renewed in lead, gutters are refitted or replaced where needed, and the site is cleared and tidied when we finish.

Tile and slate choices for Ely and Fens homes

Ely has a wide mix of homes, from period properties near the city centre to post-war houses and newer estates across the Fens. Clay tiles and pantiles suit many older homes, concrete interlocking tiles are common and practical on later houses, and natural slate gives a crisp, traditional finish on terraces and period properties.

The Fens are flat and exposed, so wind-driven rain is a real test of any roof. We will talk you through the options that suit your home, its pitch and its surroundings, and make sure ridges, verges and flashings are detailed to cope with the weather.

How long it takes and keeping you watertight

Every roof is different, so we will give you a realistic idea of the timescale when we quote, based on the size of the roof, its access and the materials. Weather can affect the programme, and we plan around it.

Your home is never left open to the elements. We strip and protect the roof in sections, and the membrane goes on as we go, so the house stays watertight while the work is under way. Most homeowners stay living at home throughout.

Permissions and next steps

Most like-for-like re-roofs on a house need no planning permission, but listed buildings, conservation areas and changes to the roof's appearance can be different. Our guide to planning permission for a new roof explains the position. Pay with Klarna is also available, and our finance page explains how it works.

If your roof needs urgent attention before a re-roof can be planned, our emergency roofer in Ely service can make it safe first. For everything else, call 07862 885143 or send us a few details. Read more about our local work as roofers in Ely.

Your questions, answered

New roofs in Ely
FAQs.

Do you fit new roofs in Ely?

Yes. We are based in Littleport and fit new roofs and full re-roofs across Ely and the surrounding villages, in tile and natural slate.

Do I need a new roof or just a repair?

If problems are isolated, a repair is usually enough. If tiles, battens or underlay are failing across the roof, replacement is often better value. We will inspect and explain honestly.

Will my house stay watertight during a re-roof?

Yes. We strip and protect the roof in sections and fit the new membrane as we go, so your home is never left open to the weather.

Do I need planning permission for a new roof in Ely?

Most like-for-like re-roofs on a house do not, but listed buildings and conservation areas can be different. Check with East Cambridgeshire District Council if you are unsure.

Can I spread the cost of a new roof?

Klarna available. You can choose how to pay with Klarna; see our finance page for details.
