Roofing for west Suffolk homes

West Suffolk has a varied housing stock. Newmarket mixes Victorian and Edwardian town houses with post-war estates and newer developments, while Bury St Edmunds has a historic centre of period properties surrounded by twentieth-century and modern housing. Out in the villages you will find clay-tiled cottages, slate-roofed farmhouses and plenty of extensions and outbuildings with flat roofs.

Each of these roofs fails in its own way, and the right fix depends on the individual roof rather than the street it sits on. That is why every job starts with a free inspection: we look properly, explain what we find and recommend the work your roof actually needs.

Clay tiles, slate and concrete roofs

Handmade and machine-made clay plain tiles are common on older Suffolk properties. They are long-lasting, but the nibs and nails that hold them can fail, and mortar ridges and verges crack with age. We replace broken tiles, re-bed or upgrade ridges and, when the time comes, carry out a full re-roof with new membrane and battens.

Natural slate on Victorian terraces and villas can last for generations if it is maintained. When the nails rust and slates slip, we refix or replace them, and our slate roofing service covers everything from a few slates to complete re-slating. Concrete interlocking tiles on later houses are robust, but the underlay below them often needs attention after decades of service.

Leadwork and chimneys

Many leaks in west Suffolk start where the roof meets brickwork. Our specialist leadwork is hand-dressed and properly chased into the joints, whether it is step flashings against a wall, soakers on a dormer, a lead valley or a chimney apron and back gutter.

Chimneys need care too. Weathered pointing, cracked flaunching and loose pots let water into the stack and the rooms below. We carry out chimney repairs from repointing and new flaunching to full rebuilds with new clay pots, finished with new lead flashings.

Flat roofs, gutters and rooflines

Flat-roofed extensions, garages and dormers are a common source of leaks once their original felt has blistered or split. We replace them with EPDM flat roofing or torch-on felt, with new edge trims and outlets so water runs off properly.

We also repair and replace gutters and fascias and soffits, so water is carried away from your walls and the rafter ends stay protected.

Towns we cover in Suffolk

Our Suffolk work is focused on Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and the west Suffolk villages around them. Each town has its own page with local advice. If you are nearby and not sure whether we cover you, call 07862 885143 and ask.

Repair before replace

A roof that leaks does not always need replacing. Often the problem is a single slipped tile, a cracked ridge, a split flashing or a blocked valley, and a careful roof repair puts it right for a fraction of the cost of a new roof. We will always tell you honestly when that is the case.

When the underlay has perished, the battens are rotten or the tiles themselves are failing across the roof, patching becomes a false economy. In that case a full re-roof is the better investment: the roof is stripped to the rafters, any defective timbers are dealt with, and a new breathable membrane, gauged battens and properly fixed tiles or slates are installed, finished with new leadwork and a dry ridge where appropriate. Either way, you get a clear explanation of the options and a written quote before any work begins, so you can make the decision that is right for your home and your budget.

Emergencies and storm damage

When storm damage or a sudden leak cannot wait, we offer 24/7 emergency roof repairs. We make the roof safe first, then inspect properly and quote for a permanent repair. Jake N. wrote in his Google review that within 24 hours of his first call the problem was solved.

For everything else, the process is simple: a free inspection, a clear written quote, careful work with a daily tidy-up and a guarantee on the finished job. Klarna is available if you would like to spread the cost; see our finance options.
