The repairs we see most on Cambridge roofs

Cambridge has a real mix of roofs: slate on Victorian terraces, clay and concrete tiles on interwar and post-war houses, and flat roofs on countless extensions, garages and dormers. The faults we are called out for tend to follow that mix. Slipped or cracked tiles and slates are common after high winds, especially where old nails have corroded. Mortar on ridges and verges cracks and falls out over time, leaving ridge tiles loose.

Failed flashing around chimneys, bays and abutments lets water in at the junctions, while flat-roof extensions can split, blister or lift at the edges. Blocked or broken gutters are another frequent cause of damp walls and stained ceilings, because water overflows straight down the brickwork instead of draining away.

How a repair visit works

First, we inspect the roof and find the real cause of the problem, not just the place where water is showing. Second, we take photographs so you can see exactly what we have found. Third, we give you a clear quote that explains the work needed and why.

Once you are happy to go ahead, we carry out the repair, clear up after ourselves and talk you through what has been done. The work is guaranteed. If we spot anything else that will need attention in future, we will tell you plainly, but we will never push work your roof does not need.

Ridges, verges and flashing

Loose ridge tiles are one of the most common repairs we carry out. Where the mortar has failed, we can rebed the ridge, or fit a modern dry ridge and dry verge system that is mechanically fixed and does not rely on mortar at all. Our dry ridge and verge page explains the difference.

Repair or replace, honestly explained

Most roofs can be repaired, and we would always rather fix the problem you have than sell you a roof you do not need. A handful of slipped tiles, a loose ridge or a failed flashing is a repair, not a replacement.

There comes a point, though, when repeated repairs stop making sense. If tiles are failing across the whole roof, the battens are rotten or the underlay has perished, patching one area will only move the leak somewhere else.
